What Happened This Week (21st – 27th)

This past week was long but it definitely wasn’t boring. Amidst the Twitter feud, premium dragging and general internet banter, here are some pretty cool things that happened this week.

House of the Dragon,

What happened this week

The week got off to a great start for Game of Thrones (GOT) fans with the release of the first episode of House of the Dragon; a prequel to GOT. The show is set to tell the full story of the Targaryen civil war 200 years before what happened in GOT. Although GOT fans have not fully recovered from the emotional trauma that was season 8 of the series, they’re giving its prequel a shot. A second chance never hurt anyone…right?

Bad Since ‘97

BNXN (fka Buju) flexed on our eardrums with his sweet melodies on his new EP; Bad Since ‘97. His EP— featuring some legends in the Nigerian music industry; Olamide, Wande Coal and Wizkid— peaked at #4 on the UK Apple music album chart and #6 on the USA Apple music chart. This adds BNXN to the short list of Nigerian artists— including Burna Boy, Wizkid and Davido— to ever make it to the top 5 on the UK’s album chart. This also places his EP as the third highest Nigerian project ever on the US album chart— after Burna’s “Love, Damini” and Wizkid’s “Made in Lagos”. BNXN definitely hit the ground running with this one.

Call of Duty

What happened this week

Zinoleesky is easy vibes and cool energy on his new single, Call of Duty. He has been steadily carving his place in the Nigerian music industry and deserves his flowers. In his new single, he managed to deliver solid tunes in less than three minutes. Brief and lit; to keep us wanting more.

Calm Down– The Remix

Rema decided his hit, Calm Down, apparently needed something more. So he went back into the studio, this time, with Selena Gomez. Left to me, the song didn’t need anything else but Selena Gomez literally said: “hold my beer” and killed it on this track. Although the pairing was a bit unusual, going by the magic they created, someone clearly did their job right by putting them both on this project.

British-Nigerian artist, Highlyy, releases her sampled version of the Nigerian hit single, “Hustle” by Reminisce featuring BNXN (fka Buju) and D Smoke. Tiktokers have anticipated her version for a while now and they’re not disappointed. Although nothing ever beats the original, she managed to make a great track with her featured UK rapper, Tion Wayne.

That’s it for this week’s roundup, we’d be back next week!
