Felabration was initiated a year after the death of the King of Afrobeats in 1998 by his daughter, Yeni Kuti. The festival holding from the 15th to the 21st of October would see fans from around the world gather at the New Afrika Shrine, Alausa, Lagos in honour of Fela. The legend has made intense contributions to Nigerian society, grassroots politics, the afrobeats genre and world music. This year’s festival, themed ‘Overtaking Overtake’ is based on his 1990 hit, ‘ODOO’ (Overtake Don Overtake Overtake).

The resurgence of excitement and reverence surrounding Fela Anikulapo Kuti and the iconic Kalakuta Shrine was reignited earlier in the year with a truly momentous event – the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron in the month of July. This historic occasion not only underscored Fela’s enduring legacy but also highlighted his profound impact on both music and culture on a global scale. The Kalakuta Shrine, a symbol of Fela’s artistic and political expression, once again became a focal point of admiration and recognition.

Fela’s unparalleled influence on the musical landscape has transcended borders and generations, continuing to ignite the passions of young and aspiring talents worldwide. His trailblazing sound, bold activism, and unapologetic individuality serve as a beacon of inspiration, reminding artists everywhere to push boundaries, challenge norms, and use their creative voices to drive change.

Just a mere two days ago, an electrifying quote from none other than Kanye West sent shockwaves through the media, declaring Fela Kuti as one of the spirits that currently resides within him. While the veracity of this claim might be a subject of intrigue, it unmistakably underscores the profound impact that Fela’s spirit and artistry continue to exert on contemporary pop culture.

Indeed, Fela’s greatness has woven itself intricately into the fabric of pop culture, leaving an indelible mark that transcends time and genre. His distinctive style, powerful messages, and revolutionary mindset have inspired countless references across music, fashion, and art. From lyrical nods to his socially conscious themes to the incorporation of his rhythms into modern compositions, Fela’s presence can be felt in the most unexpected yet mesmerizing ways.

As the world eagerly embraces the Garmspot x Felabration Capsule collection, celebrating Fela’s 80th birthday and his remarkable influence, we witness a vibrant tapestry where his legacy continues to thrive, evolving and influencing new generations of creatives and culture enthusiasts. The Kalakuta Shrine stands not only as a physical venue but as a metaphorical shrine to Fela’s undying spirit, a testament to the fact that his impact on the world’s cultural stage remains as potent as ever.
