THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF LAGOS: FASHION TAKES

One would expect that the only thing people would not be able to shut up about when watching a reality TV show would be drama. This is not the case for the Real Housewives of Lagos, a reality TV show that first aired on 8 April 2022, on Showmax Nigeria as a part of the Real Housewives reality television franchise.

Even with all the bouts of theatrics and drama, it is impossible not to focus on the mega display of fashion on the show. The show which features six housewives in Lagos— Carolyna Hutchings, Laura Ikeji, Chioma Ikokwu, Toyin Lawani- Adebayo, Iyabo Ojo, and Mariam Trimmer, showcases the lives that these women lead in the hectic city of Lagos.

The exclusive premiere of the Real Housewives of Lagos in Johannesburg, South Africa, was one of glitz, glamour and elegance as popular celebrities in the aforementioned country, as well as the stars of the show, came ready to slay and outdo one another in their outfits, reflecting the theme for the night “A celebration of Africa”.

Housewife Chioma showed up adorned in a complicated but stunning dress and headpiece ensemble. The dress, custom made by designer Weiz Dhurm Franklyn featured sewed in realistic braided elements and a peach pleated tulle triple-layered skirt. Her dramatic headpiece was by Nigerian hair conceptionalist, Zubby Definition. Her entire outfit was an astounding expression of creativity and reflected the African Royalty she was going for. This is not a look we would be forgetting soon.

Toyin Lawani looked great donning her high-end fashion brand, Elegante by Tiannah. Her getup was a bit over the top and too dark for our taste but if your taste buds are up for a Maleficent retake, this is for you. The wine and black mix just was not doing it for us and the feather and lace combo? It was a little bit much for us but it is expected of the designer who has a flair for the dramatic as is evident in most of her pieces.

A housewife that had us cooing was movie star Iyabo Ojo who came clad from head to toe in a glittering gold number designed by her very own daughter, Priscilla Ojo and made by clothing brand, Lasosa by Pam Pam. The dress boasted a wide thigh-high slit with a flowing overskirt and one sleeve covered in miniature bows and an illusion sweetheart neckline. The final icing on this golden cake was a matching gold headpiece. All in all, Ojo came to slay and served us rich African aunty vibes on the red carpet. We loved to see it!

Mariam Trimmer pulled up in an all-white outfit and the first thing that came to mind when we saw her outfit was “pretty”. Everything about her look was soft and clean. She sported a mini off-shoulder dress with a flowing train designed by high-end brand mide by mide, a fur shawl and a gigantic bow atop her head. She looked refreshing and was a great sight to see on the pink carpet.

The last two housewives, Carolyna Hutchkins and Laura Ikeji were not present at the South African premiere but if their outfits on the actual show are anything to go by, we do not doubt that they would have slayed on the pink carpet if they had been there.

Asides from the premiere, these six women have been showing up and showing out on our screens and we cannot get enough. There is always something stunning to look forward to in every episode, from exaggerated sleeves to lavish and sometimes off theme outfits, to luxurious weaves and clean make-up beats, it is obvious that these women did not come to play and are sparing no expense to slay!
